Look Before You Leap: The Move from Text to Application

Led by: Dr. Abraham Kuruvilla

The goal of preaching is to bring divine guidelines for life from the ancient biblical text to bear upon the situations of the modern congregation, thereby aligning the community of God to the will of God for the glory of God. But this preaching movement from text to application has virtually been a black box for millennia. How are preachers supposed to do this in a valid fashion and not in a random, ad hoc, and willy-nilly manner? Here’s your chance to listen to answers to these critical questions from Dr. Kuruvilla, who has been working on these thorny issues for two decades. Come one and all … and bring your questions with you! This promises to be a time of edification and enjoyment.

Dr Abraham Kuruville is the new preaching professor at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He previously served as professor of pastoral ministries at Dallas Theological Seminary. He centers his ministry around the art and science of preaching: exploring preaching through research and scholarship, explaining preaching by training the next generation of church leaders and exemplifying preaching in regular pulpit engagements in the US and elsewhere. He has served as the interim preacher of churches in Texas and Massachusetts and as president of the Evangelical Homiletics Society. He has also written several preaching commentaries, and he blogs regularly at homiletix.com. Dr. Kuruvilla is also a diplomat of the American Board of Dermatology and maintains an active clinical schedule.
